You may have driven down John F Kennedy Blvd and seen a hidden oasis a block south of Howard Ave… It’s The Bungalow, a local dining hotspot.
About a week ago I was invited to dinner for a friend’s birthday, to celebrate and dine at her favorite restaurant. To my surprise, its a block from home and I didn’t have to get dressed up (its a classy casual place) or do much damage to my wallet. That’s right, right in SOHO there is an old bungalow renovated to accomodate both indoor and outdoor seating areas, with bars, plus an upstairs private dining room.
The dinner menu is full of unique and flavorful options, not to mention their brunch, late night and lunch menus. The portions are definitely large enough to share or bring home for lunch the next day. I am always trying to eat healthy (especially when I don’t have time to run) so I flipped directly to the, “From the Land,” menu looking for a lean chicken dish. I chose the Caribbean Chicken with mango salsa (who doesn’t love salsa, none the less MANGO!) and black beans. Even if the dish wasn’t as healthy as I thought it would be, it was delightfully delicious.
We were serenaded by some live music on this Thursday night. Which at some points, to tell the truth, was a little over bearing of our conversation, even though we were not sitting close. The Bungalow offers an array of activities during the week including trivia, happy hour special, live music and more.
Did I mention, they have outdoor seating? Well, it has to be a highlight for me. Although close to a main road, the restaurant feels like it is secluded because of the strategic placement of some overgrown greenery. This night was especially comfortable, with a steady breeze and a cold drink the night was extremely enjoyable. I am sure it helped that the birthday girl loved all her gifts and we got to celebrate over a great cake from the store where, “Shopping is a pleasure.”
My next trip to the Bungalow will most likely be for brunch and a mimosa. And next time you drive by the down Kennedy and see the overgrown palm trees, think about stopping in for a good meal and relaxing atmosphere.
Fun dining… Ryan
